Name:
Named in honour of Alice and Eugen Rondorf, of Neuwied, Germany, mineral collectors who discovered the mineral with Bernd Ternes in 1979. They also discovered the mineral almarudite.
Rondorfite grains are anhedral, < 0.3 mm in diameter, and show orange brown to amber color, vitreous luster, and a light amber streak. The color difference results from different O/Cl ratio. The orange color results from (1) Fe3+/Al substitution for Mg, (2) presence of atypical MgO4 tetrahedron, or (3) electronegativity. Non-equilibrium Cl positions and the presence of Ca-Cl bonds are confirmed (Dulski et al., 2015).
An Al-bearing, triclinic-pseudocubic variant was described by Rastsvetaeva et al. (2008).
