Formula:
Fe2-x(OH)xO3-x
Originally considered as a hydrated hematite, Fe2O3.nH2O, based on specimens from Bavaria and Prussia having ~5 wt% H2O (Breithaupt, 1847).
A crystal-structure study by Wolska (1981) showed the presence of OH groups and suggested the formula Fe2-x(OH)xO3-x.
A modern study by Peterson et al. (2015) of synthetic “hydrohematite” precipitated hydrothermally at 200°C, suggested monoclinic-pseudorhombohedral symmetry.
According to Peterson et al. (2015), some researchers have argued that water and OH-group substitution can generate two distinct iron-deficient hematite structures, commonly referred to as “protohematite” and “hydrohematite”, with the general formula Fe2-x/3(OH)xO3-x (Wolska and Schwertmann, 1989; Dang et al., 1998). The OH-content, x, distinguishes these compounds: For 1 ≤ x < 0.5, the phase is classified as “protohematite”, whereas “hydrohematite” has a lesser degree of OH-substitution, with 0.5 ≤ x < 0.
