About Alushtite
Formula:
Na0.5(Al,Mg)6((Si,Al)8O18)(OH)12 · 5H2O
Name:
After the type locality near Alushta city.
First Recorded Locality:
A clay mineral with a 1:1 regular interstratification of di-trioctahedral Li-Mg chlorite of the Cookeite-Sudoite series (with cookeite:sudoite ratio close to 1:1) and dioctahedral smectite.
Originally described in 1914 from Kuru-Uzen' village (now Solnechnogorsk) near Alushta city (now Crimea peninsula, Crimea Oblast', Ukraine).
Recognised as a variety of tosudite, therefore discredited as a valid species (Burke, 2006). The validity of the discreditation is discussed. Tosudite was "discovered" in an alushtite specimen (see arguments in e.g. Pekov, 1998).
