Locality type: Mine Classification Species: Pyrite Formula: FeS2 Comments: Pyrite perched atop quartz crystals are common, particularly when a second generation of pyrite crystallization/etching is present in the pocket. Specimens of perched pyrites usually have a layer of iron oxides between the quartz and pyrite crystals, and frequently the contacts are somewhat distorted or hollow due to etching. Habit: Cubes and pyritohedrons to 5 inch diameter. Often truncated by octohedron, trisoctohedron, and diploid.
