The beginning of this mine in the late 18th century was incepted by Alexander von Humboldt during the time he worked in Bad Steben for the royal prussian government as a supervisor for the mining actions in this region.
Dewatering was an increasing problem for numerous mines in this area so von Humboldt projected the Friedrich Wilhelm adit. From 1793 it took 38 years to dig the adit on a length of 975 meters. When it was finished in 1831 the adit facilitated the drainage of the mines situated at higher altitudes in the Lichtenberg area.
