A former lode Au-As-Pb mine located in sec. 3, T33N, R8W, MDM, 2.9 km (9,400 feet) NW of Deadwood, in the headwaters area of Jennings Gulch (on the ridge between Eastman Gulch & Jennings Gulch). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in Copley Formation Bragdon Slate and Furnace ______ (andesite & greenstone). The ore body is lenticular, strikes N30E and dips NW & 72SE at a thickness of 1.52 meters.
Meta-andesite or greenstone belongs to the Copley Formation. The fracture in the formation, on which the new adit was being driven, strikes N30E, and dips 58SE. A 50 foot thick dike of granitic rock cuts the Bragdon Slate 50 feet E of Grubb and Chisman workings. Much of the gold occured in the free state. An associated rock is Late Devonian diorite. Local rocks include Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 1 (Eastern Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings. Newer development includes exploration by 3 different leases. The Moore and Moore lease extends from old No. 5 Venecia level up to surface with 90 feet of crosscutting to small vein and 115 feet of drifts, 10 foot stope. The Clayton lease extends from Venecia No. 5 level downward. A new adit was being driven N30E from 140 foot point to follow a small vein exposed by Moore & Moore. A third lease of Grubb and Chisman, was several hundred feet higher than the other two. A new level was driven on the fracture in meta-andesite for 150 feet with a raise 60 foot high on the dip of the fracture connects with a 50 foot adit above. Plans called for driving an adit 50 feet to the E to explore the granitic dike. Earlier detailed descriptions are found in Tucker (1922).
Production data are found in: Averill (1941) and Brown (1913).
A number of shipments of $400 Au ore (period values), averaging 2 to 3 tons each, have been made to smelters a few years prior to 1941. Some of the ore was rich enough so that extraction of the Au in a hand mortor was feasible. A few tons of high-grade ore were produced from the upper level of the Grubb and Chisman workings. A little good ore was taken from bunches, an inch to a few inches wide. No other production records were found.
Analytical data results: Assayed $100-$600/ton in Au (period values) from 1 foot thickness of the vein. Samples taken at intervals in No. 3 level assayed $10-$20/ton in Au (period values).
