A former Au-As mine located in sec. 28, T9N, R7E, HM (land unsurveyed for township-range-section), 8.6 km (5.3 miles) W of Potato Mountain, along Virgin Creek (1.8 miles S of Rock Lake), on Bureau of Land Management wilderness land (Trinity Alps Wilderness). Discovered in 1884. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a Au fissure deposit. The ore body is a fissure vein deposit with a lenticular shape and strikes N40W and dips 80E at a thickness of 7.62 meters and a length (?) of 103 meters. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 9 (Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings. On the Gold King claim, there is a 75 foot crosscut to 6 feet of quartz, on which a 15 foot drift is driven. On the other end, a 50 foot crosscut was driven to 7.5 feet of quartz with a 50 foot drift. The Golden Queen claim was developed to a depth of 190 feet by 4 adits at levels. The lowest adit is the longest and comprises 135 feet crosscut and 30 feet of drifts on a 2.5 foot thick vein. Development on the Nancy Lee claim consisted of 2 open cuts, 4 and 5 feet deep, respectively.
Analytical data results: 2 samples taken from the Golden Queen and Gold King by Averill indicated Au content of quartz was small.
