A former lode Au-As-Mn mine located in secs. 19, 20 & 29, T35N, R7W, MDM, 6.2 km (3.9 miles) SE of Bowerman Peak and 8.5 km (5.3 miles) E of Minersville site, along Van Ness Creek (2 miles NW of Trinity Mountain Guard Station on the N slope of Van Ness Creek), on National Forest land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in andesite, greenstone, slate and sandstone. The ore body forms pockets, strikes NW, E-W, and dips 45NE, N. Ore controls include a fault . The greenstone is described as gray, very fine-grained or aphanitic; the slate is described as soft, black and graphitic. Local rocks include Carboniferous marine rocks, unit 4 (Eastern Klamath Mountains).
Local structures include an anticline.
Workings include underground openings. A 450 foot drift to a winze was driven on the Surprise claim. There are 1,000 feet of additional workings ion this level with other drifts and stopes. The main vein was not developed below the 100 foot level. A 300 foot adit was driven on the Emma claim near creek level, with raises and drifts.
Production data are found in: Logan (1926) and in Ferguson (1912).
The largest pocket yielded $44,000 of Au (period values). 60% of the total production was from ore pounded out in hand-mortar because the gold was so coarse.
