A Mn occurrence located in sec. 10, T4S, R6E, HM, 1.5 km (5,000 feet) N of Zenia, along a fork of Mud Creek, on National Forest land. Discovered 1942. Operated by Rae F. Helmke - lessee, California (1974). Owned by the White Ranch, California (1974) (??). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
NOTE: The USGS MRDS database attributes a significant number of Mn occurrences to the “Helmke Manganese group.” Many of these are clustered rather tightly near Kekawaka, constituting a true “group;” however, others, like this locality are situated a significant distance away and do not fit the usual context of a locality being a part of a “group.” This locality is 14.0 km (8.7 miles) N of Kekawaka.
NOTE 2: There is a dscrepancy between the 2 MRDS files which pertain to this locality, file #10095211 states that this location is on National Forest land, whereas file #10141932 indicates that it is on land owned by a ranch and is a private lease operated by Mr. Helmke.
Mineralization is a Mn deposit. The ore body is 2.13 meters thick. Siliceous low-grade ore zone is 7 feet thick. Local rocks include Franciscan Complex, unit 1 (Coast Ranges).
