A former placer Au-PGE (Pt) mine located in/about sec. 22, T37N/T38N, R4W, MDM, 100 feet NW of the coordinates of record in Castella, on private land (per MRDS database-provided coordinates [see note below]). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is uncertain. The exact location along the river by Castella is not known. The location given is at the bridge crossing the Sacramento River on the S side of the town. Original county listing of Siskiyou was incorrect. Correct County is Shasta. Lat/Long determined using PLS, Castella and Sacramento River feature attributes in GIS.
Mineralization is a stream placer deposit (Deposit model: 119: Placer Au-PGE), hosted in gravels. Local rocks include Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 1 (Eastern Klamath Mountains) and/or Carboniferous marine rocks, unit 4 (Eastern Klamath Mountains).
Related tectonic structures include the Klamath Mountains Accreted Terrane.
Workings included drift mining.
Assay data: Concentrate sample yielded $13.23/ton Au (0.64 oz/ton, 22 ppm), $8.40/ton Pt (0.28 oz/ton, 10 ppm) (period values). Concentration unknown. Spencer found no PGE.
