A former Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 5, T20N, R12E, MDM, 5.0 km (3.1 miles) W of Bassetts, just NE of Packer Lake, on the E side of Packer Creek (4 miles NNW of Sierra City), on National Forest land. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
NOTE: The USGS MRDS database contains listings for 2 "Mountaineer" mines in the Sierra City District, Sierra County. Both locations are probably related to the same mine; however, the data elements to determine which is the correct location are absent. The other location (see: http://www.mindat.org/locedit.php?loc=270031) is in a shaded claim area on the topo map. Neither location is reflected on the topo map as either a named mine or mine symbol, although there is an adit symbol about 300 meters W of the location indicated by this Mindat file.
Mineralization is a vein deposit. Local rocks include Quaternary glacial deposits.
