A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in the NE¼ sec. 3, T18N, R10E, MDM, 0.5 km (0.3 mile) N of Chips Flat (coordinates of record) and 1.0 km (0.6 mile) SE of Alleghany, on National Forest land. Owned by the Ophir Mining Company in 1925. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. Around 1918 this property included the Eclipse claim. Idle since about 1902.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in serpentinite, schist and gabbro. The ore body strikes N48W and dips 54NE at a thickness of 0.61 meter. The deposit is a fissure vein 18 inches (45 cm) to 2 feet (0.61 meter) thick. The footwall is serpentine and the hanging wall is schist. The amphibolite schist is cut on each side of the vein by irregular dikes of serpentine. This is the southern continuation of the Ophir vein. The vein is well-defined but in the S part of the adit it has numerous small branches. A small, W-dipping vein E of the adit agrees in projection with a fault on the 2,100 level of the Sixteen-to-One Mine. Local rocks include Mesozoic gabbroic rocks, unit 2 (undivided) and/or undivided pre-Cenozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 42.67 meters and comprised of several adits and drifts on the same vein.
Production data are found in: Ferguson and Gannett (1932).
Total production, including the Eclipse Mine, was estimated to be $118,000 (period values).
