A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in the SE¼SE¼ sec. 26 & in the E½NE sec. 35 and in the SE¼SE¼ & E½NW¼ (E¼SW¼ ?) sec. 36, T19N, R10E, MDM, 2.7 km (1.7 miles) NE of Plumbago, along the upper S slope of Lafayette Ridge (N canyon wall of Wolf Creek) (2¼ miles E of Alleghany), on National Forest land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit with pockets hosted in slate, aphanitic volcanic rock and schist. The ore body strikes N22W and dips 82E. The lode follows the Melones Fault that brings slate against schist. The fault is marked by heavy gouge at the contact. Parallel fault planes are a few feet E, within the amphibolite schist. The fault strikes N18-26W and dips 74E to vertical. No mineralization exists at the fault contact, but small quartz seams occur in crushed schist parallel to the fault. The lode has been traced up the ridge to the lava contact. Quartz gash-fracture fillings occur in both the foot wall and hanging wall. High-grade ore occurs in small pockets. Alteration includes carbonate. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains) and/or Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface & underground openings comprised of 2 adits and open cuts.
