A former Cr occurrence/mine located in sec. 22, T20N, R10E, MDM, 1.7 km (1.0 mile) ENE of Red Ant, about 3.6 km NNW of Downieville, along the W canyon wall of Sailor Ravine, on private land within a National Forest area. Owned by C. A. and G. B. Winrod. Operated by C. A., G. B. Winrod (1942); and by C. L. Best of Ruby-Oxford Mines (1944). Produced during the period 1942 to 1944. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
The ore body is lenticular in form. The deposit consisted of several lenses approximately 8 by 6 cubic (sic) feet each. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface openings comprised of an open cut 40 by 40 by 15 cubic (sic) feet.
Production data are found in: Rynearson, Garn Arthur (1953).
Total production was 80.0 long tons (1942-1944).
Analytical data results: Ore averaged 39.03% Cr203; 12.20% Fe with a Cr:Fe ratio of 2.19:1.
