A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 2, T18N, R10E and in the SW¼SW¼ sec. 35, T19N, R10E, MDM, 0.8 km (0.5 mile) NE of Chips Flat and about 1.6 km (¾ mile) SE of Alleghany, on Balsam Flat, S ridge of Kanaka Creek, on National Forest land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.

Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in schist, Late Permian gabbro and serpentinite. The ore body strikes N65W and dips 50NE. The country rock is more than usually schistose & carries abundant quartz stringers parallel to schistosity. Gabbro crops out in the E part of the claim & is the W prolongation (sic) of gabbro-serpentine complex of the SE part of the district. Small outcrops of serpentine occur. There are 4 veins on the property. The Eastern Cross vein and Jewel vein dip to the NE while the Eastern Star and Western Cross dip to the NW. Possible reverse displacement on the Eastern Cross fissure is not more than 50 feet. Adit accessed an irregular vein with a 30-70 dip and follows a well-defined slip with a gabbro hanging wall and a schist footwall. No quartz occurs in some places but elsewhere it is 6 inches (15 cm) to 2 feet (60 cm) thick. There is extensive carbonate alteration of wallrock where the country rock is gabbro. 2 reverse faults & dip of the vein may be due to fault drag. Minor thrusts occur along the vein plane. On the Eastern Star, the serpentine footwall is altered for a few feet to carbonate-mariposite. The vein is a crushed zone in schist 3 feet thick near silicified schist that strikes N12W and dips 60W. The Jewel vein occurs on the W part of the property, strikes N55W and dips 75NE. High-grade ore occurs near where the vein cuts and displaces a serpentine dike rich angular gravel from the Jewel vein, probably, a single fragment carrying $1,100 (period values) in Au. Local alteration is carbonate. Local rocks include Mesozoic gabbroic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).

Workings include underground openings with one accessible adit and others that are caved. The adit is 450 feet long.

The upper workings yielded $2,500 (period values) prior to 1932. No other production records were found.
