A former Cr mine located in the NW¼ sec. 22, T37N, R5W, MDM, 3.0 km (9,900 feet) ESE of Rattlesnake Hill (coordinates of record) and S of the South Fork Shotgun Creek, on a located claim. Located on a steep, north-facing slope near the top of a NW-trending ridge along the S side of the South Fork Shotgun Creek. Owned by John L. Bones and Helen (100.0%), 1735 Riviera Dr., Redding, California 96001 (1976). Discovered 1895. Operated 1908-1954. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.

Mineralization is a Cr deposit hosted in diorite and dunite. The ore body(ies) is irregular, disseminated, tabular and lenticular in form, strikes N40E and dips 45NW and/or 70W, at 1.22 and/or 25 meters wide and 10 meters thick, 100 meters long. Primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation with primary ore control being lithology. There is slight wallrock alteration (carbonitization).

Chromite is found in a large tabular-shaped body of peridotite with an anticlinal structure that occurs in the NW corner of the county. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 1 (Trinity Ophiolite).

Workings include surface and underground openings. The underground openings totalled 72 meters in length. The mining method was open stope. Surface openings include several open pits, now partially filled with debris (1975). There are 2 inclines at 12 meters and 4 adits averaging 21 meters each. The adits are caved at the portals.

Production data are found in: California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 134, Part 1 Chapter 3: 144; Stinson (1975) CDMG.

Analytical data: Analyses of chromite shipped to the government G.S.A. stockpile, Grants Pass, Oregon in the period 1952-1957: 42.9% Cr2O3, Cr:Fe ratio 2.1:1 (13.8% Fe).
