A Ni occurrence located in secs. 27, 28, 34 & 35, T29S, R12E, MDM, 4.6 km (2.9 miles) N of Chorro, on U.S. Government land, under the jurisdiction of Camp San Luis Obispo Military Reservation. This occurrence occupies the crest of a narrow ridge, and extends in a SE direction through secs. 28, 34 & 35, 9 miles N of San Luis Obispo via paved and graded dirt roads.
Mineralization is hosted in peridotite and pyroxenite.
Geological description: The area is underlain by an elongated body of ultramafic rocks that is intrusive into various sedimentary units of the Franciscan Formation. The ultramafic body is mainly composed of peridotite and pyroxenite, and contains masses of gabbro and narite, of which the former are locally serpentinized. Atop the ultramafic mass, above the 2400 foot contour, is a mantle of nickel-bearing, rocky reddish brown laterite that is quite thin, probably at most a few feet deep.
