This mine worked a NS-trending copper lode which crosses Porth Navas Creek near Lower Penpoll. It was opened up from two shafts, Engine Shaft, 30 yards south of the road bridge, and Flat Rod Shaft, 75 yards north of the bridge. Adits from each bank of the river connect to them at 3 fms and 5 fms, respectively, below surface. The shafts are connected at 20 fms below adit. The workings are said to be 45 fms deep, but the mine plan shows only short drives below the 20 fm level. Stoping is only shown on the 10 fm level, where the lode was developed from drives from both shafts on a length of 95 fms along its strike.

Just north of Flat Rod Shaft, the NS lode is intersected by an ENE-trending lode, which was opened up for 35 fms at adit level and for 10 fms at the 10 fm level. The composition of that lode is not known.

Between 1833 and 1835, the mine sold 119 tons of 7.5% copper ore. It was reopened in 1907, but problems were encountered with lowering the water below the 10 fm level and it was abandoned the year after.

The grid reference marks the site of Engine Shaft.


Addenda:
A review of surface evidence in May 2013 indicates the workings covered a much larger area than previously recorded. Although mine dumps are not large, they are dotted over a bigger area than expected. Mine waste can be found in the stream north of the road and a dump with signs of an infilled shaft occur south of the bridge close to the creek (David Ifold, pers. commun. May 2013).
