Pink Lady prospect
A former clay (bentonite) deposit/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 21, T13N, R8E, SBM, 7.4 km (4.6 miles) NNW of Zzyzx (in the Soda Mountains about 7.5 miles SW of Baker; less than 0.5 mile N of Interstate highway 15 at the Zzyzx overpass, from which it can be seen, due W of Soda Dry Lake). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in tuff and lake sediments. The bentonite has a distinctive pink color on freshly exposed surfaces. In these exposures the bentonite is waxy and somewhat greasy-textured. Weathered bentonite is chalky, light-gray to pinkish-gray and exhibits conchoidal fractures and dessication cracks that form blocky exposures. The bentonite is composed of montmorillonite of unusually high quality, being free of impurities. It is a highly swelling and highly thixotropic clay. Local rocks include Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits.
Local geologic structures include folds.
Workings include surface and underground openings (the topo map reflects 1 open cast mine symbol and several prospect pit symbols at this point).
