A former lode Pb-Au-Cu-Ag occurrence/mine located in sec. 20, T9N, R14E, SBM, about 5.3 km NNE of Hidden Hill (23 miles W of Essex), on federal reservation land (Mojave National Preserve/East Mojave National Scenic Area). Operated during the periods 1933, 1938 and 1940 to 1941. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated. NOTE: The geographic coordinates provided are from the USGS MRDS database file and correspond to a group of unnamed shafts in sec. 20 on the topo map; however, the topo map labels a solitary shaft in sec. 29, same T&R, as the Big Horn Mine.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in monzonite. The ore body strikes N20E and dips 40-75W at a thickness of 1.22 meters. The formation is principally quartz monzonite, diorite, quartzite and andesite. A series of parallel, intrusive andesite dikes cut quartz monzonite. The dikes have a northerly trend. The vein is 1 to 4 feet thick in an andesite dike in quartz monzonite. Associated rocks include andesite. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include underground openings with a length of 397.76 meters and an overall depth of 99.06 meters. The contention claim has a 3-compartment shaft at 325 feet deep, and with levels at 160 and 300 feet. On the 160 level a drift was driven S for 440 feet to the Subway vein, that strikes N20E and dips 65W, and is 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) thick. On the 300 level, a drift was driven S 110 feet, and a crosscut was driven NE from the shaft 110 feet, with an additional 100 feet. The Mable claim has a 140 foot shaft with 80 feet of drifts at its bottom. At 40 feet, sulfide ore was encountered.
Production data are found in: Goodwin, Joseph Grant (1957).
A shipment of Pb ore and of Au ore was made in 1940-1941. The Pb ore contained 15.7% Pb with some Cu and Ag.
