Wyoming Mine


A former Ag-Pb-Au-Cu-Zn occurrence/mine located in sec. 19, T10S, R2W, SLM, 0.9 km (0.56 mi) SSE of Eureka townsite (2,900 feet (0.88 km) N7E of Eureka Peak; W of Eagle Canyon; adjoins the Victoria), on private land. Discovered in 1825. Owned by the Sharon Steel Corporation, Miami, Florida. Operated by the U.S. Smelting, Refining, and Mining Co. Closed in 1955. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.

Originally located as the "Wyoming Mine," the original owners failed to perform the required annual assessment work and lost control of the property. It was relocated several years later by John McChrystal and Owen Donahue, who renamed the mine the "Eagle and Blue Bell." McChrystal operated the mine profitably until the collapse of silver prices in 1893, at which time operations were suspended. The property was purchased by a group of Boston investors, who incorporated in 1897 as "The Eagle and Blue Bell Mining Co." A controlling interest in the property was subsequently acquired by the Bingham Mining Co. of Boston, MA (which also owned significant copper mines in Bingham Canyon, UT).

A polymetallic deposit hosted in dolomite. The orebody consists of pipelike shoots with a depth-to-bottom of 640.08 meters and a depth-to-top of 6.1 meters. There are 2 pipelike ore zones. Local rocks include Middle Cambrian shale and carbonate rocks in central Utah.

Local geologic structures include beds that strike N0-15W and dip 65-70E. Cross fractures trend E, ENE & WNW, and the Centennial Fault (N55E, 37SE).

Workings include underground openings with a length of 3,218.6 meters, an overall depth of 614.17 meters. There are 2 shafts; shaft No. 1 is 2,019 feet (ca. 615 m) deep, and shaft No. 2 is 1,043 feet (ca. 318 m) deep. At least one of these shafts is a 3-compartment shaft. A shaft also developed the American Star Mine to the E. There is also a small tunnel. Workings were developed partially by lessees.

Between 1897 and 1916, the mine produced more than 220,000 tons of ore, yielding 35,385 ounces (1.34 t) of Au, 3,217,676 ounces (ca. 122 t) of Ag, 1,413,102 pounds (ca. 641 t) of Cu, 33,796,415 pounds (ca. 15,330 t) of Pb, and 22,856 pounds (10.37 t) of Zn.
