A former Cr-Fe mine located in sec. 17, T23N, R9E, MDM, 4.6 km (2.9 miles) WSW of Claremont summit (coordinates of record), about 6 miles SSW of Quincy, along the South Fork Rock Creek, on National Forest land. Discovered in 1937 by Mr. Louis Eddelbuttel. First year of production was 1940. Last year of production was 1957. Operated by Mr. Herman Weeks (1957). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
Mineralization is a Cr-Fe deposit hosted in dunite. The ore body's general form if podiform, striking N26W and dipping 43N at 7 meters thick, 2 meters wide, and 62 meters long. Depth to top is 0 meters. The shape of the ore body varies from disseminated, to irregular, tabular, and lenticular. The primary mode of origin was magnatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology. Wall rock alteration is intense (carbonitization).
Local geologic structures include the regional Melones Fault Zone, which is the eastern contact of the ultramafic belt. A local shear zone , strikes N30W and dips 45NE, and cuts the ore body. This deposit occurs in a belt of ultramafic rock that averages 3 miles wide and is NW-trending from northern Sierra County, across most of Plumas County, until covered by volcanic rocks of the Cascade Range. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains) and Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range).
Workings consisted of an open pit and underground openings. The underground workings are 2 meters long and 2 meters deep (an open stope).
Production data are found in: Stinson (1975).
Approximately 550 long tons of ore averaging 50% Cr2O3, with Cr to Fe = 3.45, was shipped by 1943. Most of the original deposit was probably mined out. 9 additional tons were shipped in 1957.

No ore in sight, no reserve estimate.
Assay results: 1941-1943: 50-55% Cr2O3. Analyses by the California Division of Mines and Geology in 1975 gave the following percentages: massive 2 - 07.50%; Cr2O3: 40.19%; FeO: 11.92%; total Fe: 13.68: Al203: 21.26%; MgO Cr:Fe = 2.59.
