A former Fe mine located in sec. 15, T13N, R8E, MDM, 1.6 km (1.0 mile) SSE of Hotaling (site), about 9.3 km N of Auburn and 3½ miles W of Clipper Gap placers, on private land. Discovered in 1857. Operated from 1869 to about 1885. Owned by John Barnicott (1920-1926). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is an Fe deposit in the form of lenses at the contact of granodiorite and a metamorphic series of probable Paleozoic age. The ore minerals were magnetite and hematite containing from 40 to 65% Fe. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or Plio-Pleistocene and Pliocene loosely consolidated deposits.
Workings include unspecified underground openings.
Production was over 15,000 tons of pig iron (1883). No ore was shipped until 1869. A blast furnace operated during the period 1880 to 1885, producing 30 to 35 tons of pig iron daily. Charcoal was made locally and limestone was quarried nearby. No production of lower grade ores for iron since the turn of the 20th century. Red and yellow ochre was shipped from this vicinity in late 1920's for mineral paint.
