A former placer & lode Au occurrence/mine located in the SE¼SW¼ sec. 15 and in the NE¼NW¼ sec. 22, T14N, R11E, MDM, 1.6 km (1.0 mile) NE of Michigan Bluff, E of the S end of Chicken Hawk Ridge and W of El Dorado Canyon, on private land (placer mining patent) within a National Forest area. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Waring (1917) states that this mine is located in sec. 16.
NOTE: The USGS MRDS database presents confusing data regarding the Daniel Webster and the Champion Mines. The Champion Mine is placed 0.5 km (0.3 mile) NE of the Daniel Webster and is said to be located on the South extension of the Daniel Webster claim. This would seem illogical. Both mines' file in the MRDS reference both names in one manner or another. It would seem that the Champion Mine is on the North extension of the Daniel Webster claim. Clark (1970a) lists both mines as separate entities.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in slate. The ore body strikes NE and dips 80SE at a thickness of 1.83 meters. The 2 veins are 2 to 6 feet thick. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range).
Workings include surface and underground openings with a length of 60.96 meters and an overall depth of 38.1 meters and comprised of shallow workings, seam mining, a shaft and drifts.
