A Mn occurrence located in sec. 35, T15N, R9E, MDM, 2.0 km (1.3 miles) SSW of Cape Horn (coordinates of record) and 2.0 km (1.3 miles) SSW of Colfax, on the S slope of Cape Horn, on N margin of Burnt Flat, W side of Roberts Ravine. Discovered in 1890. Owned by Daniel Russell, California (1891). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10,000 meters (sic).
Mineralization is an exposure of a series of slaty and schistose strata, frequently micaceous and containing numerous veins and lenticular layers of quartz. The rock strikes NW and dips almost vertically. Mn is seen in many places near the base of the hill and occurs in the form of black oxide in thin seams from 1/16th to 1/8th inch in thickness. It commonly forms a network of thin veins but quantity of discovered ore is small. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
