A former Cr-Fe occurrence/claim/mine located on corner lot 18, sec. 6, T15N, R11E, MDM, 0.2 km (0.1 mile) SW of Casa Loma proper, on National Forest land. Discovered in 1917 by a Mr. Allen. First [production was 1918 and the last was in 1945. Ownerd by U.S. Forest Service - Tahoe National Forest (100%), California (1976). Operated by D. J. Sullivan (last operator), California (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. The location of the claim is uncertain. Stinson estimated the location dutring a field check in 1975.
Mineralization is a Cr deposit hosted in serpentinite. The ore body is 1.22 meters thick, 1.83 meters wide and 9.14 meters long at a thickness of 1 meter. Ore body #1 is disseminated & erregular; ore body #2 is tabular and ore body #3 is lenticular. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology. Wallrock alteration is intense (carbonitization). The deposit appears to be a weathered and eroded slide block and occurs at and near the surface. The largest ore body had the above dimensions. The deposit occurs in the easternmost of 3 sub-parallel belts of ultramafic rocks that trend northward across Placer County. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range).
Workings include surface and underground openings and consisted of a system of tunnels driven a short distance below the pre-mining surface. Mine workings could not be found during a 1975 site visit.
