A former Cr-Fe occurrence/mine located near the center of the N edge of NE¼NW¼ sec. 19, T16N, R11E, MDM, 3.4 km (2.1 miles) N of Baxter on the E canyon wall of the Bear River, NW of Sugar Pine Point, on private (patented) land within a National Forest area. Discovered in 1885 by Cap Gallatin. First production was 1885. Year of last production was 1920. Reopened in 1917. Owned by Cap Gallatin in the early 1880's. Owner by the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (1949). Owned & operated by D. J. Sullivan, W. F. Hemphill, and R. E. Nobel, California (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
The ore body strikes N60W and dips 50S at a width of 6 meters. Ore body 1 is lenticular and disseminated. Ore body 2 is a fissure vein. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology and secondary control was fracturing. Wallrock alteration is intense (carbonitization). The deposit consisted of a series of lenses and boulder float. This deposit occurs in the easternmost of 3 sub-parallel belts of ultramafic rocks that trend northward across Placer County. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of 2 adits, a crosscut, a short raise and numerous open cuts and pits.
Production data are found in: Rynearson, Garn Arthur (1953).
The records show that 111.2 short tons of ore were shipped in 1918 and 51.4 tons in 1919, and 40 tons in 1920. Cameron reported that no ore was seen in the pits, but much remained on the property.
