A former placer Au occurrence/drift mine located in sec. 28, T11N, R7E, MDM, 3.8 km (2.4 miles) ESE of Rocklin. The property is comprised of a claim of 40 acres. Operated in 1909. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. Said to be near the Laird Mine.
Crawford (1894) states this mine is in sec. 20, also 3 miles E of Rocklin, which is in sec. 19. Location in sec. 28 seems much more likely than sec. 20 as auriferous gravels are exposed in sec. 28 and not in sec. 20. Lindgren (1894b) states that the Barton is evidently located down channel from the Lee Mine.
Mineralization is in cemented gravel with cobbles seldom larger than fist-sized. The channel is 350 feet wide and was mined 6 to 7 feet high. The gold was fine and flaky and of high-grade, selling for $19.00 (period values) per ounce. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 60 foot shaft (1892).
Operated in 1909 and said to have been a good producer for some time.
