A Cr-Fe occurrence/mine located in the SW¼SE¼ sec. 11, T16N, R8E, MDM, about 2.6 km WSW of Nevada City proper, along the N side of Deer Creek, N of Glenbrook, on private land. Discovered and first produced in 1916. Owned by Isabelle C. Sherman, California (1976). Operated by Eleanor E. Hoeft (principal operator during WWI), California (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
The ore body strikes N00E and dips 50S at a thickness of 0 meter. The ore body is disseminated, lenticular. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology. Wallrock alteration is intense (carbonitization). Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a 47 foot inclined shaft and a drift from its bottom plus a small stope.
Approximately 500 to 600 tons of mine-run, disseminated ore carrying 10 to 15% Cr2O3 was taken to Champion mill to be concentrated. The concentrates from this ore contained about 32% Cr2O3, and a high Fe content. 146 long tons were shipped in 1918.
