A former placer Au-PGE (Pt), Cr, Ti occurrence/mine located in secs. 33 & 34, T18N, R10E and in secs. 3, 4 & 9, T17N, R10E, MDM, at and near Relief (3 miles E of North Bloomfield); 10 miles NE of Nevada City), on National Forest land. Discovered in 1851. Operated by Western Gold Inc. (1941- ). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 to 5,000 meters (2 USGS MRDS files). There are 3 locations to this deposit. Location given id for the eastern canyon at the town of Relief. PGM production not verified.
Mineralization is a Pliocene stream placer deposit (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 119; USGS model code: 39a; BC deposit profile: C01. C02; Deposit model name: Placer Au-PGE; Mark3 model number: 54), hosted in gravel of the same age. The ore body is comprised of stream sediments at a thickness of 60.96 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included stream hydraulics. Occurrence of zircon inferred by the listing of Ti as a component present. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range) and/or Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 6 (Northwestern Sierra Nevada).
Workings included surface openings/operations comprised of an open pit, drifting and hydraulicking operations. Hydraulic operations were carried on in the spring of 1949.
Production data are found in: Logan, Clarence August (1941).
Analytical data results: Concentrates yielded $1,011.31 (period values)/ton Au (0.22 ounce/ton/7.5 ppm); $106.50 (period values)/ton Pt (0.016 ounce/ton/550 ppb) at 9 pounds concentrate/ton of gravel.
Reserve resource information: Resource estimates ran 5 to 15 million cubic yards remaining.
