A former lode Au-Ag-Pb-Cu-W occurrence/mine located in the NE¼ sec. 16, 21 & in the NE¼ sec. 28, T16N, R9E, MDM, 2.1 km (1.3 miles) S of Banner Mountain, about 2½ miles SE of Nevada City and about 5 miles E of Grass Valley. Owned by the Lava Cap Gold Mining Corporation. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.

Mineralization is hosted in the Calaveras Complex (argillite). The ore body is lenses and stringers, strikes N25W and dips 50E-51NE, at a thickness of 7.62 meters. There are two main ore zones: 1 under lava capping of Banner 100 feet depth; other part of the Central Mine. Controls for ore emplacement included faulting prior to, and after, deposition of quartz filling. Agrillite, belonging to the Calaveras Formation becomes siliceous toward a granodiorite contact on the north southern (sic) part of the mine cut by "latite" dikes, which are cut by ore fractures. In the Banner diorite and andesite dikes present, also older than the vein structure. Both types of dikes have no observable bearing on ore shoots. The veins are highly fractured from faulting. Associated rocks include Pennsylvanian diorite, latite and andesite. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range).

Workings include surface and underground openings with a length of 792.48 meters and an overall depth of 304.8 meters and comprised of drifts, crosscuts, drill holes, raises & stopes. Both the Central and Banner Mines have 51 degree inclined shafts. For additional data on workings, see chandler: 413-419.

Production data are found in: Eric, J.C. (1948); Goodwin, Joseph Grant (1957).

Production statistics: Year: 1943 (period = 1934-1943): (estimated) ^50,000 tons of concentrates with 236,000 pounds Cu and 258,000 pounds Pb. Assays were $20 to $30 (period values) Au/ton.
