A former pumice mine located in sec. 14, T2S, R31E, MDM, 3.0 km (9,900 feet) S of Benton Hot Springs (on W side of Blind Spring Valley. Quarry in the NE¼SW¼; prospects in the S½NW¼, N½SW¼ and in the SE¼.), on National Forest land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Pumice occurs in layers which do not crop out but are well exposed in cuts, etc. The layers are from 5 to 20 feet thick, strike N10-20E and dip from 5-7SE, and are overlain by a loose pumiceous soil 1 to 4 feet thick. Pumice is white and in angular fragments ranging from dust-like to particles 3 inches in diameter.
Local rocks include Quaternary volcanic flow rocks, unit 2 (Long Valley Caldera).
Workings include surface openings comprised of extensive open cuts, and test pits.
Production information: Annual output well over 1,500 tons. Mined since the middle 1940's.
Material used as aggregate in lightweight building blocks.
