A pumice deposit located in secs. 21 & 28, T3S, R32E, MDM, 4.4 km (2.7 miles) W of Hammil, on National Forest land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Pumice is exposed in workings and narrow, steep-walled ravines. Appears to be widespread and is overlain by buff, sandy, pumiceous soil covering froma few inches to 5 feet thick. Most of the pumice in the various layers is fine-grained and pale pink. Local rocks include Quaternary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 2 (Long Valley Caldera).
Workings include surface openings comprised of an open pit, bulldozer cuts, test pits.
Production: Opened up in the early 1940's & worked intermittently for the next few years. Abandoned.
Commodity used for aggregate and locally in the manufacture of building blocks.
