A former placer and lode Au mine located in secs. 26, 27 & 35, T3S, R19E, MDM, 0.4 km (1,500 feet) SSW of Hite Cove, along the South Fork Merced River (5½ miles SW of El Portal), on private (patented) land in a National Forest area. Property consists of 45 patented acres. Operated in the 1870's. Worked principally in the late 1870's by the South Hite Mining Co. Operated by John A. Woods, et al (timeframe = ?). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. Placer Au probably in sec. 27. Property comprised of the 3 claims plus the South Side mill site.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in slate and granite. Geology is similar to that of the Hite Mine with a slate footwall and granite hanging wall. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings believed to be superficial.
