A former lode Au mine located in secs. 4, 5, 8 & 9, T3S, R16E, MDM, 2.5 km (8,300 feet) SW of Coulterville, at the northern tip of Horseshoe Bend Mountain, on private (patented) land. Operated during the period 1900 to 1902 by Frank A. Smith, C/O Mrs. Carol B. Shultis. Property consists of 59.44 acres of patented land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralizationm is a vein deposit hosted in Late Jurassic greenstone and volcanic rock (aphanitic). The ore body strikes NW and dips NE. The country rocks are massive greenstone & volcanics of the Upper Jurassic Penon Blanco. Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings comprised of several tunnels, all in need of cleaning out.
