A former Au mine located in the NW¼ sec. 2, T5N, R12E, MDM, 1.5 km (0.9 mile) SSE of Rich Gulch (town), along the North Fork Calaveras River. Property was comprised of 134 acres under agricultural patent and 2 unpatented claims covering 3,000 feet in length called the Sparrow-Hawk claim and the Alert claim. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in Late Permian Mica Schist. There are 7 parallel veins extending from the adjoining Ilex property into the NE¼NW¼ of section 2. The series is cut by a vein striking N22E, which, on the Sparrow Hawk claim, has a width of 2 feet, and is said to be tracable for 3,000 feet. The best ore is in pockets. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 60.96 meters and an overall length of 914.4 meters. A 700 foot adit with drifts and a 65 foot raise were driven on the S Tiger vein. Also, a 200 foot adit was driven.
Pockets yielded $4,000 (period values) from the Iowa Mine portion of the property. No other production record was found.
