A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 1, T30S, R40E, MDM, about 1.3 km SSW of Johannesburg near the San Bernardino County line (¾ mile E of Randsburg). Owned by Edward Herkelrath, Randsburg, California (1949- ). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in monzonite and rhyolite. The ore body is 0.91 meter (3 feet) thick. There are 2 systems of veins, each 1 to 3 feet thick on surface. One set on the N side of the dike is in monzonite. The other set is in rhyolite. Monzonite is intruded by rhyolite dikes. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 15.24 meters and comprised of shallow openings on the veins. The property is well-situated and the owner believed that development would expose a large, low-grade deposit.
Production data are found in: Tucker, W. Burling & Reid J. Sampson (1940).
