A former Mn mine located in T21N, R1E, SBM, 5.4 km (3.1 miles) W of Shore Line Butte (coordinates of record), at the mouth of Wingate Wash in Death Valley, on National Park Service wilderness land (Death Valley National Park/Death Valley Wilderness) (private lease). Discovered in 1941. Owned by R.C. Troeger (1974). Operated by Dorris Cuddeback and Flaharty, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10,000 meters (sic).
The Wingate Wash (Black Dream) Manganese Deposit, whose location is given as about seven miles west of West Side Road in Death Valley alongside the Wingate Wash road in T20N, R1 or 2E, SBM, was idle in 1951. It consisted of eleven unpatented claims owned by Roy C. Troeger. Development comprised a series of open cuts; production by lessees had not exceeded forty tons. (Greene, Linda I. (1981): III.A.5.b)(2))
Mineralization is hosted in Pliocene sandstone and conglomerate. The ore body is a fissure deposit in Tertiary conglomerate and sandstone and is broken by many small cross-faults. Sooty manganese occurs in short lenses throughout a zone 50 to 75 feet wide, and the largest lens is 3 fet wide. Many lenses are less than 8 inches thick. Iron oxide and calcite are abundant. Local rocks include Plio-Pleistocene and Pliocene loosely consolidated deposits and/or Tertiary volcanic flow rocks, unit 16 (Northern Mojave Desert) and/or Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits.
