Western Tungsten Mine


A former W mine located in the S½ sec. 34, T6S, R31E, MDM, 9.6 km (6.0 miles) WNW of West Bishop, on the western margin of the Tungsten Hills. Operated during the periods 1937-1938, 1940 & 1943. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.

Mineralization is hosted in schist and hornfels. Controls for ore emplacement
included fractures. The pendant is comprised of several nearly vertical, elongate bodies of tactite interstratified with schist and hornfels. Contact between the metamorphic rocks and granite, between the adit level and surface exposure on the contact, dips 30SW, truncating the structures in the metamorphic rocks. Scheelite occurs in ore shoots near the granite contact.
Mineralized along bedding planes. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges) and/or Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits.

Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of open cuts, a glory hole and a haulage adit.

Production was from 9 small-scale operations.
