An Fe occurrence located in sec. 9, T23S, R41E, MDM, 0.3 km (0.2 mile) NNE of Mountain Spring, on the N side of Mountain Springs Canyon, on military reservation land (China Lake Naval Ordnance Test Station). MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in aplite/Late Cretaceous granite. The ore body is pinch and swell, strikes N45W to N52W and dips 75 northerly.
Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall length of 11.28 meters and an overall width of 1.22 meters. There is an adit. A small trench above the adit is 8 feet long by 3 feet by 2 feet deep. Two other small pits are on the E side of the ridge. Initial work done at this location was probably done at the outcrops of hematite-rich vein which appears sporadically along a 45W to N52W bearing. Three small trenches were dug in this vein on both the E and W sides of the hill crest on the N side of Mountain Springs Canyon. The trenches range in elevation from approximately 4780 feet to 4828 feet. It appears that the drift was driven later to intersect the downward extent of the vein. The vein pinched a very short distance below surface and it was not intersected. At the portal the drift consists of altered Fg quartz-K-feldspar-plagioclase-biotite aplite with creamy white clay seams. It was driven 8 feet vertically below the outcrop (data based on 3 field observations).
