A former Au-Ag mine located in secs. 29 & 30, T17S, R45E, MDM, 1.6 km (1.0 mile) S of Skidoo (just S of Skidoo Road), on National Park Service land (Death Valley National Park). Property consisted of 4 claims. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. UTM estimated; location projected; land unsurveyed.

A bona-fide Sunset Mine is located on the south side of the gravel Skidoo Road about three miles east of the Wildrose-Emigrant Canyon Road. Last worked about 1940, its four claims produced about 100 tons of ore averaging $20 worth of gold per ton for custom mills. Small amounts of silver were also recovered.

The Sunset Mine about 2-1/2 miles southeast of this site (Sunset-Tiny Mine site ?) consists only of a timbered vertical shaft with drifts run on three levels. Downhill (northwest) from the mine and across the Skidoo road is a house possibly associated with the mining operation that appears to be of 1930s or 1940s vintage.

Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in quartz monzonite. The ore body is irregular at a thickness of 1.83 meters. The vein is thickest E of the shaft, near a N-trending fault. The orebodies are a few inches to 6 feet thick. Local rocks include Cenozoic (Tertiary) granitic rocks? (Skidoo Pluton).

Workings include underground openings. Prospect lodes (?) (holes ?) for 200 feet along the surface. An inclined shaft, drifts 50 feet long run on the 50, 100, and 125 foot levels. Some stoping was done above the 50 foot level. Last worked in 1940.

Production data are found in: Norman, L.A. & Richard M. Stewart (1951).

No specific production record was found. Approximately 100 tons of ore carrying an average $20 Au/ton (period values) was shipped to custom mills.

Analytical data results: From surface to the 50 foot level, the ore averaged 4 feet in thickness and carried 0.50 ounce Au/ton.
