An Fe-silica occurrence located in sec. 18, T17S, R42E, MDM, 9.7 km (6.0 miles) WNW of Panamint Butte (Cottonwood Mountains), at the northern end of the valley, on National Park Service wilderness land (Death Valley National Park/Death Valley Wilderness). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
NOTE: The Dunes actually cover portions of secs. 7, 8, 17-20, and 29.
Local rocks include Quaternary sand deposits, unit 2 (inland).
