A Mn occurrence located in T20 or T21N, R1E, SBM, on the northern margin of the Owlshead Mountains, E of Wingate Wash, on National Park Service wilderness land (Death Valley National Park/Death Valley Wilderness) (private lease). Discovered in 1941. Owned by R.C. Troeger (1974). Operated by Cuddeback, Dorris, and Flaharty, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10,000 meters (sic). The exact locality of this occurrence is in apparent doubt.
Mineralization is hosted in sandstone & conglomerate. The ore body is a fissure deposit in Tertiary conglomerate and sandstone. It is fragmented by many small cross-faults. Sooty Mn (oxides) occur in short lenses dispersed throughout a zone 50 to 75 feet wide. The largest lens is 3 feet wide. Many of these lenses are less than 8 inches (20 cm) thick. Iron oxids and calcite are abundant. Local rocks include Tertiary volcanic flow rocks, unit 16 (Northern Mojave Desert) and/or Plio-Pleistocene and Pliocene loosely consolidated deposits.
Analytical data results: The ore grade was estimated at 25% Mn.
