A former Cr occurrence/mine located in sec. 1, T10N, R9E, MDM, 2.5 km (1.5 mile) SSW of Four Corners and 4.3 km (2.7 miles) NNE of Rescue, N of Weber Creek and S of the Springvale School. Discovered in 1870. Operated in 1916, and in 1943-????. First produced in 1946 (modern operation ?). Owned by the Morning Star Mining Corp., B. L. Jones (President), California (1977); Owned by the Lilyama Copper-Gold Mining Company (1948); and by the Volo Associates, which reopened the Lilyama in 1943, California (1977). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. Little is known of the early history of the Lilyama-Pioneer.
NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10115192 states that this is a Cr deposit; however, it presents a list of materials occurring here, that includes : bornite, chalcopyrite, gold, magnetite & pyrite, but no chromite. It also includes Aubury (1908) as a reference. This reference is a copper resources publication. Meanwhile, MRDS file #10092027 presents data strictly related to Cr.
The ore body strikes S30E and dips 45S at a thickness of 12.2 meters, width of 18.3 meters, and a length of 183 meters. The ore body is breccia fill & irregular. The primary mode of origin was hydrothermal. Primary ore control was fracturing. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface & underground openings with a length of 609.6 meters and comprised of open cuts.
45 tons of chromite ore were mined in 1916.
The general tenor of the ore is low-grade.
