A former lode Au-Cr occurrence/mine and Au drift mine located in secs. 17, 18 & 19, T13N, R11E, MDM, 1.5 km (0.9 mile) S of Volcanoville, along the W side of Quartz Canyon, at the NE end of the Hornblende Mountains, on National Forest land. Discovered and first produced in 1917. Owned by the Green estate (during the early 1900's); Ruby H. Bryant, California (1976). Operated by Lulu Stone, lessee, California (1976); L.H. Butcher Company (leased from the Green estate during WWI); and by John Taylor (1942). Intermittently active during the period 1928 to 1940. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. A Au drift mine was located in section 17 . No Cr in section 17, only in sections 18 & 19.

Mineralization is a vein deposit and a placer Au deposit. The ore body is lenticular in form, 9 meters wide and 81 meters long, in a shear zone. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology. Wallrock alteration is intense (carbonitization). Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).

Workings include underground openings comprised of a 900 foot adit and a 180 foot vertical shaft. A 2-stamp mill was erected.

Production data are found in: Clark and Carlson (1956).

Talliaferro states that 110 long tons (3 carloads) of chromite were shipped from the property in 1917 (46% Cr2O3) and an unknown quantity in 1918. In 194_ (1940 ?) R (?) shipped 64 long tons of ore. Chromite averaged 44%. This mine was originally a Au mine.
