Adams Quarry


The Standard Slag quarry is a now flooded and abandoned quarry in Adams County, Ohio. The quarry is located east of the intersection of Ohio State Route 32 and State Route 73. The exact year the Standard Slag quarry began operations is unknown, but it was first mentioned in a 1983 report by the Ohio Geological Survey. In 1989, the Standard Slag company was acquired by the Lafarge Corporation and was officially "re-incorporated" as a satellite company of Lafarge in 1991.

The quarry continued operating until 1994, when it then underwent reclamation. On August 17, 1994, the permit for the Standard Slag quarry (IM-659) was amended into the license of the nearby Plum Run quarry (IM-237). The Plum Run Quarry is currently (2025) owned and operated by Heidelberg Materials. Heidelberg Materials may have plans to resume mining at this location again.

The rocks exposed in the Standard Slag quarry in descending stratigraphic order are the Greenfield Dolomite, the Lilley Formation, and the Bisher Formation.
