A Ni-Au occurrence located in secs. 1, 12, 13, 24, 30 & 31, T12N, R11E, MDM, about 6.6 km SW of Quintette, along the W side of Rock Creek, on National Forest land. Discovered in 1849 (for Au); Ni-bearing laterite noted in the 1950's. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. Georgetown is about 1.5 miles from the N part of this area, which is accessible via numerous paved and graded dirt roads.
Mineralization is hosted in serpentinite and pyroxenite. The ore body is 3.05 meters thick. Serpentinite and partially serpentinized pyroxenite form a narrow N-trending, 8 mile long belt situated 1 MT. (?) E of Georgetown. Red lateritic soil occurs in patches on the serpentinite and averages a few feet in depth, up to 10 feet deep in sec. 12. The laterite aggregate area is perhaps more than 150 acres. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada) and/or undivided pre-Cenozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).
