Operated from around 1886 to about 1926, and reopened and active in 1966. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. Some reference material quotes the location as being 1 mile S of Kelsey, others 1 mile W, so sec. 23 may be correct. There is a slate quarry shown at approximately this location on USGS folio Placerville .
A metamorphic slate deposit. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface openings/operations comprised of a quarry with a 200 foot face and up to 200 feet deep. A 13,000 foot tramway delivered the quarried material to Placerville. A mill for hoisting, saving polishing & grinding was being installed in 1966. Operation was to have employed 20 men eventually (1966).
Large amounts of dimension slate were mined, much of which could be worked up into good roofing slate.
