A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in the SW¼SE¼ sec. 13, T11N, R10E, MDM, 1.3 km (0.8 mile) ESE of Kelsey, on private land. Property holdings were 102 acres. Operated by the W. F. I. Bell estate) C/O Jay R. Fogal. Operated during the 1880's, 1890 to 1894, 1902, 1932 and 1935. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. This is the first mine in California to use electricity for operation of the mine and milling machinery.
Mindat editor's note: There are 2 sets of MRDS data for this locality. Set 1 includes 3 MRDS locality files and references a MAS-MILS file. The second set includes 2 additional MRDS locality files and cites a second MAS-MILS file. One MRDS locality file from each set are in sequential order. The 2 MAS-MILS files are likewise in sequential order. All files agree of location about ½ mile N of Kelsey in sec. 13. Only MRDS file #10006951 uses the spelling of "Kelley." These files all apparently pertain to the one and the same Kelly Mine. There is also apparent confusion between this mine and the Kelley Brothers Mine at Goose Flat.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in slate. The ore body strikes N10W and dips 25E at a thickness of 15.24 meters. The vein and seams occur in a zone 20 to 50 feet thick. The vein is 2 feet thick. The gold is very fine. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Local geologic structures include schistosity of the slate which is N15W while the vein is almost due N.
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall length of 152.4 meters and an overall width of 12.19 meters and comprised of the original open cut 500 feet long. Later development included a 200 foot inclined shaft and a 1,200 foot adit. A 10-stamp mill was erected and Huntington mills were installed. An alternate description of the workings indicates 2 fifty foot shafts, 150 feet apart, both on the vein with short drifts.
No production record was found.
The ore yielded up to $16 (period values) Au/ton. $14,000 (period values) of Au was removed from a blanket seam of pocket Au in 2 days while the adit was being driven. The seams yielded $2 to $3 (period values) Au/ton.
