A slate (dimension) deposit/quarry/mine located in the NE¼ sec. 36, T11N, R10E, MDM, 0.2 km (0.1 mile) E of Chili Bar (coordinates of record), along the S side of the South Fork American River, just upstream of its confluence with Big Canyon and just E of the Chili Bar bridge, on private land. Discovered in 1887. Operated during the period 1887 to 1897. Idle until 1928 when it was reopened by new owners and was still producing in 1956. Owned & operated by Placerville Industries, Inc., California (1990). Operated by the Pacific Minerals Co., Ltd. (timeframe = ?). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings. This was originally an open pit operation but was subsequently developed as an underground mine with a drift adit. Overhand stoping in pillar and chamber workings was employed. A grinding and sizing plant was erected in 1928 timeframe.
Originally produced roofing shingles and other forms of dimension slate. After reopening and the installation of the grinding and sizing plant, roofing granules and slate dust and minor amounts of dimension slate were produced.
